In our quest to build a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future, one industry playing a significant role is the production of polyurethane (PU) vegan leather. Traditional forms of PU, like solvent-based PU and water-based PU, have been the industry standard for years. However, a new, eco-friendlier alternative is emerging: Solvent-Free Polyurethane (SF PU).

In this blog post, we will explore the intricacies of SF PU, comparing it to its traditional counterparts to understand the implications of this transition better.

What is Polyurethane (PU)?

Polyurethane is a type of polymer that is versatile and used in numerous applications, from automotive parts and building insulation to furniture and footwear. Polyurethanes can be rigid or flexible and are known for their resilience, flexibility, and resistance to weather, oil, solvents, and other chemicals.

There are two main traditional forms of PU: Solvent-based and Water-based.

Solvent-Based PU

Solvent-based PU involves the use of solvents as a carrier medium for the PU resin. While it provides excellent performance characteristics such as high gloss, durability, and chemical resistance, the use of solvents poses significant environmental and health concerns. These solvents release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and climate change. They can also lead to health issues for workers exposed to them.

Water-Based PU

Water-based PU (WPU) uses water as the primary solvent, significantly reducing VOC emissions and enhancing worker safety. While WPUs can offer performance similar to traditional solvent-based PU, they typically have a longer drying time and can be more sensitive to environmental conditions during application. This sensitivity can make them less suitable for some applications.

Enter Solvent-Free PU

Solvent-Free PU is a relatively new player in the field and aims to alleviate both the environmental impact of solvent-based PU and some of the performance limitations of water-based PU.

Environmental Impact

The primary advantage of SF PU is its significantly lower environmental impact. By eliminating the use of solvents, SF PU reduces VOC emissions to nearly zero. This benefit not only helps mitigate climate change but also significantly reduces potential health risks for those working with the material.


From a performance standpoint, SF PU is designed to provide high-quality results similar to those of solvent-based PU. This includes excellent chemical resistance, durability, and flexibility. In many cases, SF PU can also achieve faster curing times than water-based PU, addressing one of the primary limitations of WPU.


While solvent-free PU might not be suitable for all applications, it represents an important step forward in the sustainable production of polyurethanes. The move towards SF PU reflects a broader trend in industry and manufacturing toward more sustainable practices, and it’s a development that we should all welcome.
